Always Embrace Relationships (Even When Your Ego Is Crushed)

Don’t ever let a single negative occurrence hold you back from focusing on the importance of relationships. Throughout our careers, we all encounter experiences that shape our lives and define our actions.

Lately, I have been pondering the meaning of impactful relationships. Have you ever thought about how relationships impact your everyday life and even your future?

What is the meaning of relationships – well, according to the dictionary – the term {re · la · tion · ship} means, “the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected.” You may be wondering why I am particularly focused on relationships. In my mind, how could we not be focused on such vital components of our wellbeing and health?  I recently experienced an impactful event that reshaped my thought and action process that I would like to share.

Last month, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 30th Annual Spring Fling Gala. This year’s theme was Moonlight Masquerade featuring music, cocktails, live and silent auctions, and a wide variety of delicacies from local restaurants. Although I didn’t eat, drink, or bid on any items, my participation was bar none the best gig at the Gala. During my three-hour shift, I got to mingle with the guests while cuddling an adorable ‘adoptable’ puppy named Raindrop. Raising awareness, volunteering, and standing up for animals who have been abandoned, unwanted, and shown cruelty is part of my DNA and fundamentally defines my extroverted personality.

Throughout the evening, as I actively engaged with over 350 guests, I came in contact with a few individuals that showed interest and were potential suitors for Raindrop. However, based on my intuition and conversations, there was a particular couple that I was determined should adopt Raindrop. I knew it was the right fit – and they, too, fell in love with her.

As the sun began to set and my shift was just about to end, Raindrop leaped out of my arms and landed between my feet. I was mortified and devastated. How could I, of all people, allowed this to happen? Fear not – Raindrop was fine; she was instantly swooped back into my arms and happily kissing and wagging her tail.

Nonetheless, my ego was crushed.

The night shortly ended with all the puppies safely back in their kennels waiting for their forever homes. And, rather than taking myself to dinner and embracing my adoration for animals and giving back to a deserving organization, my usual upbeat self, started to cry, and I somberly drove home.

The next day I reached out to the Helen Woodward’s Director and even drove to the Center to ensure Raindrop was happy and healthy. She was – in fact, Raindrop was already adopted and on her way to her new home. Guess who with? Yep, the couple I instinctively knew was the right fit for Raindrop!

Don’t ever let a single negative occurrence hold you back from focusing on the importance of relationships. Throughout our careers, we all encounter experiences that shape our lives and define our actions. I often think back to this evening and, in an instant, how this situation made such an impact. Rather than focusing on any mishap or negativity, instead, choosing to focus on positivity – meeting new people, strengthening current relationships, embracing challenges, and being aware of my surroundings – is what creates opportunities. What will your next opportunity be?
