McKinney Walks for American Lung Association

Lung disease is the number three killer in the US

I recently become involved in the American Lung Association and have committed to participate in the 2013 Fight for Air Walk on November 10th, 2013 at the Embarcadero Marina Park South in San Diego. We all, from time to time, take things for granted; it’s just human nature. One gift I enjoy is being able to breathe in fresh air; for me, there is nothing better than having the ability to fill my lungs to capacity. Millions of children and adults are not so fortunate. Here are a few facts I have learned from the ALA as to why breathing clean and healthy air are so important:

  • Lung disease is the number three killer in the US
  • More than 37 million Americans have chronic lung diseases
  • Asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) are the most common obstructive lung diseases affecting health impairment and work disability
  • Lung disease is growing faster than other major diseases

If you have ever experienced the inability to “take in air,” you can understand why this cause is so important.
